James Adams is a former English professional cricketer who enjoyed a prolific sixteen-year career with Hampshire County Cricket Club. Born in Winchester in 1980, Adams progressed through Hampshire's youth system and represented England at the youth level, including the 2000 Under-19 World Cup, before playing first-class cricket for Loughborough UCCE while studying at Loughborough University.
After making his senior debut for Hampshire in 2002, Adams established himself as a dependable opening batsman. In 2013, he succeeded Dimitri Mascarenhas as captain for both the County Championship and one-day formats, becoming the first Hampshire-born player to captain the county since World War II. Under his leadership, Hampshire secured promotion from Division Two of the County Championship in 2014.
Throughout his career, Adams accumulated nearly 20,000 runs across all formats, making 233 first-class, 133 one-day, and 123 Twenty20 appearances. Though initially regarded as a classical red-ball batsman, he adapted to become a key figure in Hampshire's limited-overs successes, winning the Twenty20 Cup in 2010 and 2012, as well as the HRV Cup with Auckland. Following his retirement from playing in 2018, Adams transitioned into coaching, working with Hampshire and the Hobart Hurricanes.
