John Hamilton Adams is an American environmental activist, lawyer, and author best known as the co-founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Born in 1936, Adams established the NRDC in 1970, serving as its executive director until 1998, when he assumed the role of president. Under his leadership, the organization grew into a powerful force for environmental advocacy, spearheading major campaigns to protect public health and natural resources.\n\nThroughout his career, Adams and his team at the NRDC played a pivotal role in shaping modern environmental policy. His efforts contributed significantly to the passage of the Clean Water Act, the phasing out of lead from gasoline, and the reduction of emissions from coal-burning power plants. In addition to his legal and advocacy work, Adams has contributed to environmental literature, authoring three books and numerous research papers that address critical ecological challenges.\n\nIn recognition of his decades of service and profound impact on environmental conservation, Adams was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010.
