George Adamski (1891–1965) was a Polish-American author who gained international prominence in the 1950s as one of the first and most famous UFO "contactees." Presenting himself as a philosopher, teacher, and saucer researcher, Adamski captured public attention by sharing photographs of what he claimed were alien spacecraft. He asserted that he had established contact with friendly extraterrestrials, whom he referred to as "Space Brothers" or Nordic aliens, and claimed to have traveled with them to the Moon and other planets.
Adamski's literary career was defined by his accounts of these alleged extraterrestrial encounters. In 1953, he co-authored Flying Saucers Have Landed with Desmond Leslie, which became a major bestseller. He followed this success with Inside the Space Ships in 1955 and Flying Saucers Farewell in 1961. Together, his first two books sold hundreds of thousands of copies, cementing his status as a leading figure in early ufology.
While Adamski's writings found a wide and receptive audience, they also drew heavy skepticism. Most UFO researchers, investigators, and mainstream commentators dismissed his claims as an elaborate hoax, labeling him a charlatan. Despite this criticism, his work had a lasting cultural impact, particularly in Japan, where his ideas influenced postwar depictions of aliens and science fiction in popular media.
