George Washington Atherton was an American educator and soldier who dedicated his career to academic leadership. He is best known for his significant tenure as the president of Pennsylvania State University, guiding the institution through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Atherton assumed the presidency of the university in 1882. He served continuously in this administrative role for over two decades, remaining at the head of the institution until his death in 1906.
