José Joaquim de Campos da Costa de Medeiros e Albuquerque was a highly versatile Brazilian intellectual who made significant contributions to his country's literary, academic, and political landscape during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in 1867, he established a multifaceted career that spanned poetry, journalism, teaching, and public service. Throughout his life, he worked variously as a short story writer, essayist, dramatist, novelist, and orator, demonstrating a remarkable breadth of creative and intellectual output that reflected the dynamic cultural shifts of his era.\n\nMedeiros e Albuquerque is perhaps most widely recognized for writing the lyrics to the Brazilian Republic Anthem (Hino da Proclamação da República) in 1890, a patriotic work that cemented his place in the nation's cultural history. Beyond his creative writing, he was deeply involved in the institutionalization of Brazilian literature. In 1897, he became one of the founding members of the prestigious Brazilian Academy of Letters, occupying its 22nd chair. He remained an active and influential figure within the Academy until his death in 1934, even serving as the institution's President in 1923.
