W. L. Alden

William Livingston Alden (1837–1908) was a versatile American figure of the late nineteenth century, establishing a diverse career as a journalist, humorist, and fiction writer. Alongside his literary endeavors, Alden was well-known as an enthusiastic promoter of canoeing, integrating his personal passions with his active public life.
In addition to his writing, Alden served his country in a diplomatic capacity. He was appointed as a United States diplomat in Rome, serving in this role from 1885 until 1890. Following his diplomatic tenure, Alden chose to remain abroad, residing in Europe for the majority of his remaining years before returning shortly before his death in 1908.
