Robert Allerton was an American industrialist heir, artist, art collector, and garden designer. He is celebrated for his creation of "The Farms," a magnificent estate and manor house located in rural Piatt County near Monticello, Illinois. In 1946, Allerton donated this expansive complex to the University of Illinois, transitioning his private sanctuary into a public treasure.\n\nAllerton's design philosophy transformed a vast Illinois prairie into a highly personalized fantasy land. He masterfully integrated a Georgian-Revival mansion with extensive European-style gardens, neoclassical statues, and Far Eastern art. Today, the property is known as the Robert Allerton Park and attracts approximately 100,000 visitors annually. The estate was registered as a National Historic Place in 2007, and its accompanying Allerton Natural Area was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1970, preserving Allerton's unique artistic and ecological legacy.
