Walter Jack Palance (born Volodymyr Palahniuk) was an acclaimed American actor whose career spanned over half a century, marked by his rugged presence and versatile performances in Westerns, crime dramas, and television. Born in Pennsylvania to Ukrainian immigrants, Palance served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and attended Stanford University before transitioning to the stage. He quickly made a name for himself in theater, winning a Theatre World Award in 1951, which paved the way for a highly successful transition to film.
Palance's early cinematic career was defined by immediate critical acclaim. After making his debut in Elia Kazan's Panic in the Streets (1950), he earned consecutive Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in Sudden Fear (1952) and the classic Western Shane (1953). His intense screen presence made him a sought-after talent, leading to diverse roles both in Hollywood and Europe. Notably, he starred in Jean-Luc Godard's influential French New Wave film Contempt (1963) and portrayed the iconic vampire in the 1973 television adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
In the latter part of his career, Palance found renewed popularity with younger audiences. He hosted the television series Ripley's Believe It or Not! in the 1980s and took on memorable roles in blockbuster films such as Young Guns (1988) and Tango & Cash (1989). This late-career resurgence culminated in his performance as the gruff cowboy Curly in the comedy City Slickers (1991), for which he won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Off-screen, Palance remained deeply connected to his heritage, actively supporting the Ukrainian-American community and serving as chairman of the Hollywood Trident Foundation.
