Joseph Alexander Altsheler (1862–1919) was an American journalist, editor, and highly prolific author of juvenile historical fiction. Born in Kentucky, he built a successful career in journalism, working as a reporter and editor, before finding widespread success as a novelist. Over his active writing career, he produced fifty novels and at least fifty-three short stories, capturing the imagination of young readers with tales of adventure set against the backdrop of major historical events.

Altsheler's literary output is particularly notable for its structured series format. Out of his fifty novels, thirty-two were divided among seven distinct series. These multi-volume works focused on pivotal eras in American and global history, including the French and Indian War, the American Civil War, the Texas Revolution, the settlement of the American West, and the First World War. His narratives aimed to educate young readers about history while providing engaging, action-filled plots.

Through popular series such as The Civil War Series and The Young Trailers Series, Altsheler established himself as a prominent voice in early twentieth-century children's literature. His dedication to historical themes and his background as a reporter helped him craft stories that remained popular long after his death in 1919.
