James Drummond Anderson was a British administrator, scholar, and linguist who dedicated much of his life to the study and instruction of South Asian languages. He began his professional career in 1873 when he joined the Indian Civil Service, a position he held for twenty-seven years until his retirement in 1900. Throughout his service in India, Anderson gained extensive firsthand experience with the region's diverse linguistic landscape.
After concluding his administrative career, Anderson transitioned into academia, serving as a lecturer in Bengali at the University of Cambridge. He became widely recognized as a leading authority on the Bengali language as well as several other regional tongues. Through his teaching and scholarly expertise, he played a key role in advancing the academic understanding of Indian languages in Great Britain during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
