Alan Wolf Arkin was an American actor, director, and musician whose career spanned seven decades. Born in 1934, Arkin began his journey in the performing arts as a member of the influential sketch comedy group The Second City. He soon transitioned to the Broadway stage, earning critical acclaim and a Tony Award for his performance as David Kolowitz in the 1963 play Enter Laughing. He continued to make his mark on theater, starring in the comedy Luv and earning a Tony nomination for directing Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys in 1971.

Arkin's transition to film brought immediate success. He received Academy Award nominations for his early roles in The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (1966) and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968). Over the following decades, he became a celebrated character actor, known for his sharp comedic timing and dramatic depth. His extensive filmography includes memorable performances in Catch-22, The In-Laws, Edward Scissorhands, and Glengarry Glen Ross. In 2006, Arkin won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a foul-mouthed grandfather in the indie hit Little Miss Sunshine, and he later received another Oscar nomination for his role in the 2012 drama Argo.

In addition to his film and stage work, Arkin was a prolific television actor and voice artist. He earned Emmy nominations for his roles in Escape from Sobibor and The Pentagon Papers, and later starred in the Netflix comedy series The Kominsky Method. He also lent his voice to various animated projects, including The Last Unicorn and BoJack Horseman. Arkin passed away in 2023, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most versatile and respected performers of his generation.
