Richard "Chufty" Ashby, born in London in 1972, is a prominent English professional poker player who established himself as a formidable competitor in both live tournaments and high-stakes online cash games. He acquired his nickname "Chufty" during his university years due to his frequent use of the slang term "chuffed." Ashby first encountered poker at his local tennis club and through casual games with his father, transitioning to competitive tournament play in the mid-1990s.\n\nWhile Ashby began his tournament career with live events, including a recorded win at the 2001 Grosvenor UK Open, he became widely recognized for his prowess in online poker. He gained significant attention in July 2009 when he emerged as online poker's highest cash winner over a four-week period, securing over $1.8 million. Known for his preference for Omaha poker, Ashby has competed against some of the world's top players at the highest stakes, earning sponsorship as a professional player for Black Belt Poker in 2010.\n\nIn addition to his online success, Ashby has achieved major milestones in live tournaments. He won his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet in June 2010 in a $1,500 Seven Card Stud event, followed shortly by a second-place finish in the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship. Later that same year, he won a World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) title in Pot Limit Omaha. Ashby secured his second WSOP bracelet in 2024, once again triumphing in a $1,500 Seven Card Stud event.
