Alfred Hayes (1911–1985) was an American novelist, poet, screenwriter, and television writer whose career spanned both the United States and Italy. Over his lifetime, he contributed to various literary and commercial mediums, establishing a diverse body of work that bridged poetry and screenwriting.\n\nHe is perhaps most widely recognized for his poem about the labor activist Joe Hill, beginning with the famous line 'I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night.' The poem was later set to music by Earl Robinson and became a legendary folk song, performed by prominent artists such as Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Paul Robeson.
