Born in St. Louis in 1849 to Jonathan Wells Babcock and Catharine Smith, William Henry Babcock pursued a career that balanced legal expertise with literary endeavors. He completed his education at the Columbian University Law School and initially worked as a journalist. He later transitioned into a legal career in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in patent law. This specialization followed a year of service as a patent examiner within the United States Patent Office.
Beyond his professional legal practice, Babcock was an active author and poet. His published writings encompassed several collections of poetry alongside various historical novels and historical works. Throughout his life, Babcock balanced his writing with a large family; he married Ann Johns Earle in 1874, with whom he had at least five sons and six daughters, and later married Gertrude Lee Mahood in 1897. Babcock lived and worked in Washington, D.C., until his death in 1922.
