Frank Bacon was an American character actor and playwright whose career was defined by a dramatic late-stage breakthrough. For many years, Bacon worked in relative obscurity, navigating the theatrical world without widespread recognition.

His fortunes changed dramatically with the 1918 play Lightnin', which he co-wrote and starred in. The production became an unprecedented sensation, setting a Broadway record for its era by running for 1,291 performances.

Bacon's dedication to the role ultimately took a physical toll. After the Broadway run, he continued with the show on tour, completing more than 700 additional performances. He was eventually forced to step down from the production due to severe fatigue, and he passed away from a heart attack just one week later.
