Robert William "Bob" Barker was an American media personality, television host, and dedicated animal rights advocate whose career spanned over half a century. Born in Darrington, Washington, Barker spent much of his youth on the Rosebud Indian Reservation and was a registered citizen of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. After serving in the United States Navy Reserve during World War II, he began working in radio while attending college, eventually moving to California in 1950 to pursue a full-time career in broadcasting.
Barker transitioned to television in 1956 when he was hired to host the popular game show Truth or Consequences, a role he maintained until 1975. In 1972, he began hosting The Price Is Right on CBS, which would become the longest-running game show in North American television history. Barker's charismatic screen presence and connection with audiences established him as a major pop culture icon, and he hosted the program for thirty-five years before his retirement in 2007.
Beyond his broadcasting achievements, Barker was a prominent and passionate advocate for animal welfare. He frequently used his platform to promote animal rights, famously concluding each episode of The Price Is Right with a plea for viewers to spay and neuter their pets. Throughout his life, he supported numerous organizations, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, leaving a lasting legacy in both media and activism.
