Will Croft Barnes was an American soldier who served as a private in the United States Army Signal Corps during the late nineteenth century. He is best remembered for his distinguished military service and heroic actions in the Arizona Territory, particularly during the conflicts of the American Indian Wars.
On September 11, 1881, Barnes was stationed at Fort Apache when the outpost was besieged by warriors under the Apache leader Geronimo. Demonstrating notable initiative and courage, Barnes managed to escape the surrounded fort and undertook a perilous ride to Fort Thomas to secure reinforcements. His actions successfully brought soldiers from Fort Thomas to the aid of the besieged garrison at Fort Apache. In recognition of his gallantry, Barnes was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 8, 1882, with an official citation honoring his bravery in action.
