Sir John Barrow, 1st Baronet, was an English geographer, linguist, writer, and civil servant whose career spanned significant diplomatic and administrative roles. He participated in the Macartney Embassy to China, a landmark British diplomatic mission, and subsequently spent time working and studying in South Africa.

Barrow's most enduring administrative legacy was his long tenure as the Second Secretary to the Admiralty, a position he held from 1804 until 1845. Alongside his civil service, he was an active writer, publishing The Eventful History of the Mutiny and Piratical Seizure of HMS Bounty in 1831, which became the definitive classic account of the historic mutiny.
