John Arthur Barry was an English-born journalist and author who spent a significant portion of his life and career in Australia. Born in Torquay, Devonshire, England, in 1850, Barry made the decision to emigrate to Australia during the 1870s. This move placed him in a rapidly growing colonial environment, where he would establish himself as a writer.

Beyond his literary and journalistic pursuits, Barry also possessed firsthand experience with maritime endeavors. Around 1877, he returned to a life at sea, working aboard ships along the eastern coast of Australia for a period of about two years. This period of maritime service contributed to his diverse life experiences prior to focusing on his writing. Barry spent his later years in New South Wales, continuing his professional endeavors until his death. He passed away in Sydney on September 23, 1911, due to chronic myocarditis.
