Augustus Theodore (Theo) Bartholomew was a dedicated librarian and editor who spent his entire professional career at the Cambridge University Library, serving from 1900 until his death in 1933. Over more than three decades, Bartholomew became a respected figure within academic and literary circles, maintaining close personal and professional relationships with several prominent writers of his era. Among his notable friends and correspondents were the war poet Siegfried Sassoon, the novelist Forrest Reid, and the Uranian poet and fellow librarian Charles Sayle.
In addition to his archival work, Bartholomew made significant contributions to literary scholarship. He collaborated with Henry Festing Jones to edit the comprehensive works of the novelist and essayist Samuel Butler, a major project published in several volumes between 1923 and 1926. Bartholomew also dedicated himself to researching the life of the eccentric writer Frederick Rolfe, collecting extensive materials intended for a biography. Though he did not complete the biography himself, his efforts preserved crucial historical resources for later biographers.
