Henry Augustin Beers was an American author, poet, and literary historian who spent several decades as a prominent academic at Yale University. Born in Buffalo, New York, in 1847 to Elizabeth Victoria Clerc and George Webster Beers, he pursued his higher education at Yale, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1869. Although he was admitted to the New York bar in 1870 and briefly practiced law, his professional interests soon shifted toward education and literature. In 1875, after working as a tutor, Beers joined the English department at Yale University. Over the course of his long academic career, he established himself as a versatile writer, balancing scholarly research with creative endeavors. His published output spanned multiple genres, including poetry and comprehensive works on literary history. Beers remained associated with the university and the town of New Haven, Connecticut, where he lived until his death in September of 1926.
