William Dixon Colley, also known as Dixon Colley, was a pioneering Gambian journalist, publisher, and editor whose career significantly shaped the media landscape of the Gambia. Born on November 14, 1913, in Bathurst (now Banjul, the capital of the Gambia), Colley dedicated his life to the pursuit of professional journalism and press advocacy in his home country.\n\nColley is best remembered for his foundational role in organizing the Gambian press corps. He was a co-founder and the first Chairman of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), an organization established to promote and defend the freedom of expression and the rights of media workers. He also served as the union's Secretary General, cementing his legacy as a central figure in the development of Gambian media and civil society.\n\nThroughout his career, Colley worked across various editorial and publishing capacities, contributing to the growth of independent journalism in West Africa. He passed away on January 17, 2001, in the Gambian town of Sukuta, leaving behind a lasting legacy of advocacy and professional standards for generations of Gambian writers, editors, and reporters.
