Jethro Bithell (1878–1962) was an English scholar and academic who dedicated his career to the study and teaching of modern languages, particularly German. Born to a collier's family at Birchall Farm, Hindley, near Wigan, Bithell pursued higher education at Owens College in Manchester. He graduated with first-class honours in Modern Languages in 1900 and subsequently earned his Master of Arts degree from the same institution.\n\nTo further his linguistic and cultural expertise, Bithell undertook postgraduate studies abroad, traveling to Munich and Copenhagen. Upon returning to England, he began his academic career as a Lecturer in German at his alma mater in Manchester. His pedagogical and scholarly capabilities soon led to his appointment in 1910 as the Head of the German Department at Birkbeck College, London.\n\nBithell remained in this influential position for nearly three decades, shaping the study of German literature and language until his retirement in 1938. After a long career in London higher education, he retired to Paignton, where he passed away in 1962.
