William Black (1841–1898) was a novelist born in Glasgow, Scotland. Active during the Victorian era, Black achieved immense popularity during his lifetime, with contemporary critics and readers frequently comparing his literary output favorably to that of Anthony Trollope. Despite his significant commercial success and high critical standing in the nineteenth century, Black's literary reputation did not endure. Following his death in 1898, his fame and popularity quickly waned, and his works did not retain their readership or critical attention far into the twentieth century.
