Alexander "Sandy" Calder was a prominent American sculptor who revolutionized three-dimensional art. He is best known for inventing "mobiles," which are innovative kinetic sculptures powered by motors or air currents that embrace chance in their aesthetic. Alongside these dynamic pieces, Calder also created static sculptures termed "stabiles" and designed numerous monumental public sculptures.
Artistic talent ran in Calder's family; both his father, Alexander Stirling Calder, and his grandfather, Alexander Milne Calder, were also sculptors. Despite his success, Calder preferred not to analyze his work or share artistic theories, famously stating that such theories should not be broadcast to other people.
