Elizabeth Bonhôte (baptised 1744 – 1818), born Elizabeth Mapes, was an English novelist, essayist, and poet. Active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, she contributed to the literary landscape of her era through various writings, though much of her work has since faded from mainstream prominence.
She achieved her greatest literary success with the publication of Bungay Castle, a Gothic romance. The creation of this novel was closely tied to her personal life; her husband had purchased the actual ruins of the historic Bungay Castle, which inspired her to write an atmospheric romance centered around the landmark. Through this notable work, Bonhôte secured her place among the early writers of English Gothic fiction.
