Robert Sidney Bowen, Jr. was an American author, journalist, and editor whose career spanned several decades of the twentieth century. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1900, Bowen served as an aviator during World War I, an experience that would later deeply inform his literary output. Following his military service, he worked as a newspaper journalist and magazine editor before transitioning into a prolific career as a fiction writer.

Bowen is most widely recognized for his fast-paced adventure books aimed at young readers, particularly those written and published during World War II. Among his most famous creations are the Dave Dawson War Adventure Series and the Red Randall Series. These works captured the imagination of wartime youth, blending military aviation themes with heroic exploits.

Throughout his career, Bowen published under various names, including R. Sidney Bowen and the pseudonym James Robert Richard. He continued writing and publishing until his later years. Bowen passed away from cancer in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1977 at the age of seventy-six, leaving behind a legacy of popular mid-century youth fiction.
