Marion Zimmer Bradley was an American author who wrote extensively in the genres of fantasy, historical fantasy, science fiction, and science fantasy. She began her writing career at the age of seventeen and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hardin-Simmons University. Bradley became highly regarded for introducing a distinct female perspective to sword and sorcery fantasy, a genre that had previously featured very few prominent female viewpoints.
Her most famous works include the Arthurian historical fantasy novel The Mists of Avalon and the expansive Darkover science fantasy series. Beyond her own novels, Bradley was an active figure in the speculative fiction community. She co-founded the Society for Creative Anachronism in 1966 and served as the editor for the long-running Sword and Sorceress anthology series, which promoted female protagonists and writers in fantasy. In recognition of her contributions, she was posthumously awarded the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement in 2000.
Despite her literary popularity during her lifetime, Bradley's legacy was severely tarnished posthumously. In 2014, her daughter publicly accused Bradley of sexual abuse. Additionally, allegations emerged that Bradley had assisted her second husband, Walter Breen—a convicted child abuser—in the grooming and sexual abuse of multiple children. Following these revelations, numerous science fiction and fantasy authors publicly condemned Bradley, significantly altering her historical reputation.
