Stephen H. Bancroft is a retired Episcopal priest and administrator who has served in prominent ecclesiastical and community development roles across the United States. He completed his undergraduate studies in History and Economics at Texas A&M University before earning a Master of Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary. Bancroft first achieved recognition during his tenure as Rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas, where he became a prominent voice in the regional diocese by the mid-1990s.\n\nDuring his time in Houston, Bancroft was instrumental in local urban development, spearheading the creation of the Tax Incremental Refinance Zone #2 in Midtown Houston. This initiative significantly boosted local land values, capturing over $372 million in appraised value within an eight-year period. His leadership within the church led to nominations for high-profile ecclesiastical offices, including Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas in 2002 and Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio in 2005.\n\nBancroft later transitioned to Detroit, Michigan, where he served as the Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. He left this ecclesiastical post in 2008 to address socioeconomic challenges directly, becoming the Executive Director of the Detroit Office of Foreclosure Prevention and Response. In this capacity, he advocated for housing stability and appeared on public media programs, including the PBS broadcast Facing the Mortgage Crisis in 2009. He subsequently transitioned to the private sector, serving as the President and CEO of Commonwealth Holdings, a firm specializing in modular workforce housing.
