Willis Bradley Haviland was a pioneering American military aviator whose historic career spanned both World War I and World War II. Born in 1890, Haviland gained early prominence as a volunteer pilot during the First World War. He joined the Lafayette Escadrille, a French Air Force unit composed largely of American volunteers, becoming the sixteenth American to do so. Through this service, he was among the very first American combat pilots to fight against German forces before the United States officially entered the conflict.

Following his early combat experiences, Haviland continued to make significant contributions to military aviation history. Most notably, he achieved a major technological and operational milestone by becoming the first pilot to successfully launch an airplane from a battleship. During World War II, his extensive experience led him to serve as a commanding officer of a naval air station. Haviland's career as an aviation pioneer concluded with his death in 1944.
