James Wasdale Brough, widely known by the nickname "Gentleman Jim," was a highly versatile English sportsman who achieved prominence during the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Silloth, Cumberland, Brough established a remarkable athletic legacy by competing at the highest levels of both rugby union and rugby league, while also maintaining an amateur career in association football.
In rugby union, Brough played as a fullback, representing Cumberland at the county level and earning international honors for the England national team. At the club level, he played for Silloth RUFC. His diverse athletic talents were further demonstrated in association football, where he served as an amateur goalkeeper for the Liverpool reserve team.
Brough subsequently transitioned to professional rugby league, where he enjoyed a distinguished career playing as a fullback or centre for Leeds. He represented England and captained the Great Britain national team on the international stage. Following his retirement from playing, Brough remained active in the sport as a coach during the 1940s and 1950s. In this role, he managed the Great Britain national rugby league team, as well as club sides Batley and Workington Town. He passed away in Workington, Cumbria, in 1986.
