George Douglas Brown was a Scottish novelist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although his career was cut short by his untimely death, he secured a lasting place in literary history through his realist prose, which challenged the prevailing literary trends of his time.
Brown is best known for his highly influential realist novel, The House with the Green Shutters, published in 1901. The work is celebrated for its stark, realistic portrayal of Scottish life, standing in sharp contrast to the more romanticized depictions common in contemporary fiction.
