Maria Elizabeth Budden (c. 1780 – 26 April 1832), born Maria Elizabeth Halsey, was an author, translator, and novelist active during the early nineteenth century. She dedicated much of her literary career to producing didactic literature aimed at young readers. To maintain her anonymity, a common practice for female writers of her generation, Budden frequently signed her published works using the simple initials "M. E. B." or adopted the maternal pseudonym "A Mother," which emphasized the instructional and nurturing tone of her writing.\n\nAmong her most notable literary achievements was the True Stories... series, a collection of history books written specifically for young people. These educational volumes proved to be highly successful, maintaining their popularity and remaining in print for many years. Although her books reached a wide audience and helped shape early nineteenth-century children's education, very few details about Budden's personal life have come to light, leaving her historical legacy centered almost entirely on her surviving written works.
