Sir Ernest Alfred Thompson Wallis Budge was a prominent English Egyptologist, Orientalist, and philologist active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Best known for his extensive career with the British Museum, Budge dedicated much of his life to the study of the ancient Near East. His efforts significantly advanced the public's understanding of ancient civilizations through his prolific writing and curatorial work.\n\nThroughout his career, Budge made numerous expeditions to Egypt and the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan on behalf of the British Museum. During these travels, he acquired a vast array of antiquities, successfully building the museum's renowned collection of cuneiform tablets, historical manuscripts, and papyri. His acquisitions helped establish the institution as a premier center for Near Eastern scholarship.\n\nIn addition to his curatorial duties, Budge was a highly prolific author who published numerous books on Egyptology. His publications were instrumental in translating complex archaeological and historical findings into accessible works for larger, general audiences. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field of Egyptology and his dedicated service to the British Museum, he was knighted in 1920.
