Peter Burchard (1921–2004) was an American author, illustrator, and freelance designer whose creative career spanned the mid-to-late twentieth century. Known for his deep interest in American history, Burchard successfully combined his talents in visual art and narrative writing to produce compelling historical accounts and illustrations.
His most prominent literary achievement is the 1965 historical book One Gallant Rush. The work focuses on the life of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the pioneering 54th Massachusetts Regiment, the first military unit consisting of African-American soldiers in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Burchard's narrative provided a detailed and respectful look at the regiment's formation, their struggles against prejudice, and their ultimate bravery at the Battle of Fort Wagner.
Decades after its initial release, One Gallant Rush gained widespread cultural recognition when it served as a major basis for the 1989 cinematic masterpiece Glory. The film, which went on to win multiple Academy Awards, brought Burchard's historical research to a new generation of viewers. Beyond this landmark work, Burchard maintained a diverse career as a freelance designer and illustrator, contributing to numerous publications and historical projects throughout his lifetime.
