Sarah Purcell is an American historian and academic who serves as the L.F. Parker Professor of History at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Her scholarly research and teaching focus primarily on American history, with a particular specialization in military history and the era of the American Civil War.

Purcell's academic career began at Grinnell College, where she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1992. She subsequently attended Brown University for her graduate education, earning a Master of Arts in 1993 and completing her Doctor of Philosophy in 1997.

After obtaining her doctorate, Purcell joined the faculty at Central Michigan University, where she taught until 2000. That year, she returned to Grinnell College to continue her academic and teaching career, focusing her research on military and Civil War topics.
