Alfred Higgins Burne (1886–1959) was a soldier and military historian who applied his practical soldiering experience to the analysis of historical campaigns. Over the course of his military career, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), a background that deeply informed his subsequent historical writings and methodologies.

Burne is most famous for originating the theory of 'Inherent Military Probability.' This historiographical guideline suggests that in cases where historical records of a battle are unclear or contradictory, historians should assume that commanders took the course of action that a trained twentieth-century staff officer would find most logical. This perspective bridged the gap between practical military science and historical reconstruction, offering a systematic framework for interpreting ambiguous historical accounts of warfare.
