Catherine de Vivonne, marquise de Rambouillet, widely known as Madame de Rambouillet, was an influential society hostess and a major figure in the literary history of seventeenth-century France. Born in Rome, Italy, in 1588, she eventually established herself as a central presence in French cultural life.

Through her celebrated gatherings, she fostered an environment that significantly shaped the literary developments of her time. She remained a prominent figure in French society until her death on December 27, 1665.
