Captain David McCampbell was a highly decorated United States Navy officer, naval aviator, and Medal of Honor recipient who served his country for over three decades. Entering naval service and retiring in 1964 after 31 years of duty, McCampbell is best remembered for his historic achievements as a fighter pilot during World War II.\n\nDuring the war, McCampbell distinguished himself as the United States Navy's all-time leading flying ace, earning the moniker 'Ace of the Aces' within the branch. Flying the F6F Hellcat, he achieved 34 aerial victories, making him the top ace for that aircraft type. He concluded the war as the third-highest scoring American ace overall and held the distinction of being the highest-scoring American ace to survive the global conflict.\n\nIn addition to his overall victory tally, McCampbell set a United States single-mission aerial combat record. On October 24, 1944, during the opening stages of the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, he shot down nine enemy planes in a single mission. His extraordinary combat record remains a landmark achievement in American military aviation history.
