Joachim Heinrich Campe (1746–1818) was a prominent German writer, linguist, educator, and publisher. Active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, he is remembered as a major representative of the German Enlightenment, contributing to the intellectual and cultural shifts of his era.
In addition to his literary and publishing endeavors, Campe was a key proponent of philanthropinism, an educational reform movement of the Enlightenment. Through his multi-faceted career as an educator and linguist, he sought to apply these reformist principles to language and instruction.
