William Carleton was an Irish novelist and writer active during the nineteenth century. Born on March 4, 1794, in Prolusk (often spelled as Prillisk on his gravestone) in Clogher, County Tyrone, Carleton spent his life documenting the people of his homeland. He later moved to Dublin, where he died on January 30, 1869, on Sandford Road in Ranelagh.\n\nCarleton is best known for his work Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry. This collection features ethnic sketches of the stereotypical Irishman, offering a detailed look at the cultural representations of the era.
