Brigadier John Alan Lyde Caunter was a senior British Army officer, author, and outdoor sportsman. Born in 1889, Caunter served his country during a period of major global conflict, eventually rising to the rank of Brigadier. During his military service in World War I, he was taken prisoner by German forces. He successfully escaped from captivity and later published a written account detailing his experiences and escape from Germany.

Beyond his military achievements and wartime writing, Caunter was also known as a pioneer of shark angling off the British coast, helping to popularize the sport in the region. He lived a long life, passing away in 1981.
