James Chalmers was a Scottish-born missionary who dedicated his life to Christian ministry in the Pacific. Born in 1841, he spent much of his career active in Rarotonga and New Guinea, working to establish a presence in these regions.

In April 1901, Chalmers's missionary work came to a tragic end. While visiting a small island in the Gulf of Papua, he and thirteen of his companions were killed and eaten by the local population.
