Robert Chambers was a prominent nineteenth-century Scottish publisher, geologist, and evolutionary thinker. Alongside his elder brother and business partner, William Chambers, he became a highly influential figure in mid-nineteenth-century scientific, literary, and political circles. Based in Edinburgh, the brothers established a successful publishing house that helped democratize access to knowledge through affordable educational materials and journals.

Beyond his publishing endeavors, Chambers was deeply engaged in the scientific debates of his era. He was an early proponent of phrenology, active within the Edinburgh Phrenological Society, and pursued a keen interest in geology. His intellectual pursuits culminated in his most famous and controversial work, Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation.

Published anonymously in 1844, the book presented a speculative theory of cosmic and biological evolution that pre-dated Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Because of the intense theological and scientific controversy surrounding the book's evolutionary ideas, Chambers kept his authorship strictly secret to protect his publishing business and social standing. His authorship was not officially acknowledged until after his death.
