Sir William Laird Clowes was an influential British journalist and naval historian active during the late Victorian era. Although he initially trained for a career in law, Clowes harbored a deep-seated passion for literature and writing. He published his first literary work in 1876 and committed himself fully to journalism in 1879, embarking on a prolific career that would span several decades.

Clowes is best remembered for his monumental multi-volume work, The Royal Navy, A History from the Earliest Times to 1900, a comprehensive study that remains a standard reference text and continues to be published. In addition to his historical narratives, he wrote extensively on contemporary naval technology and strategic developments. His journalistic curiosity also led him to explore international social dynamics, resulting in well-regarded articles concerning racial politics in the Southern United States.

His dedication to naval history and journalism earned him widespread acclaim during his lifetime. Clowes was knighted for his services, received the prestigious gold medal of the United States Naval Institute, and was awarded a civil list pension. Despite enduring years of debilitating ill-health, he remained an active intellectual figure until his death in Sussex in 1905.
