Do You Make These Mistakes in English?

Alpheus Sherwin Cody was an American writer, educator, and entrepreneur who dedicated his career to simplifying the study of the English language. Rejecting traditional, rigid methods of academic instruction, Cody championed a colloquial approach to grammar and composition, arguing that effective communication was more valuable than formal pedantry. He began publishing essays, books, and articles in 1893, maintaining a prolific output that spanned nearly six decades until 1950. In an early 1895 volume, he offered the enduring advice to aspiring authors: 'Write what you know—so go out and know something.'

Cody is most famous for his innovative home-study course, launched in 1918, which utilized a patented, self-correcting workbook format. The program was heavily promoted through his iconic advertisement, 'Do You Make These Mistakes in English?', and ultimately reached over 150,000 students. Through his business acumen and practical educational philosophy, Cody democratized language instruction for generations of self-directed learners, leaving a lasting mark on adult education and advertising history.
