Everett B. Cole (1910–2001) was an American writer of science fiction and a professional soldier whose literary career was closely tied to the mid-century speculative fiction scene. Cole served in the United States military, notably fighting at Omaha Beach during World War II. He later worked as a signal maintenance and property officer at Fort Douglas, Utah, before retiring from active military service in 1960. Following his retirement, he earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics, subsequently teaching math, physics, and chemistry at Yorktown High School in Texas.\n\nCole's writing career began in the early 1950s, with his debut science fiction story, "Philosophical Corps," appearing in the prominent magazine Astounding Science Fiction in 1951. This story, along with two others, was later compiled and expanded into his 1962 fix-up novel, The Philosophical Corps, published by Gnome Press. His second major work, The Best Made Plans, was serialized in Astounding in 1959, though it never received a standalone book publication. In addition to his science fiction, Cole also co-authored historical books focusing on the south Texas region.
