Herbert Coleridge was an English philologist who played a foundational role in the history of lexicography. He is historically recognized as the very first editor of the ambitious dictionary project initiated by the Philological Society, an endeavor that would ultimately evolve into the world-renowned Oxford English Dictionary.
In addition to his pioneering linguistic work, Coleridge belonged to a distinguished literary family, being the grandson of the celebrated Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Although his life and career were cut short by his death at the age of thirty, his early editorial efforts helped lay the groundwork for modern English lexicographical scholarship.
