Stephen William Buchanan Coleridge, born on May 31, 1854, was an English author, barrister, and dedicated advocate for social reform. Active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Coleridge balanced his professional career in law with a deep commitment to humanitarian causes and literary pursuits until his death on April 10, 1936.

Coleridge is particularly remembered for his advocacy on behalf of vulnerable populations. He was a passionate opponent of vivisection, campaigning against animal experimentation. Additionally, his commitment to welfare led him to co-found the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, an organization established to protect children from cruelty and neglect. Through his diverse efforts as a writer, legal professional, and reformer, Coleridge sought to address systemic cruelty in society.
