James Joseph Collins is an American biomedical engineer and bioengineer widely recognized as one of the founders of the field of synthetic biology. His pioneering research spans stochastic resonance, neurostimulation, and biological dynamics, with a particular focus on synthetic gene networks and programmable cells. These innovations have significantly advanced global health efforts, influencing the detection and treatment of infectious diseases such as Ebola, Zika, SARS-CoV-2, and antimicrobial resistance.

Collins completed his undergraduate studies at the College of the Holy Cross before earning his doctorate in medical engineering from the University of Oxford in 1990. He spent a significant portion of his academic career at Boston University as the William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor. In 2014, he joined the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he serves as the Termeer Professor of Medical Engineering & Science and directs the Antibiotics-AI Project, alongside roles at the Broad Institute and Harvard's Wyss Institute.

Over his distinguished career, Collins has received numerous prestigious accolades. He is an elected member of all three US National Academies (Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine). His honors include a MacArthur Fellowship in 2003, the Lagrange Prize in 2010, the Dickson Prize in Medicine in 2020, and both the Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology and designation as a Clarivate Citation Laureate in Chemistry in 2023.
